Transforming Creative Tension

Helping people to engage conflict in a way that opens the possibility for healing and growth

Conflict is a regular part of life, and my hope is to help make it a more generative, even healing experience. While conflict isn’t easy, especially when people have suffered harm, I believe there are many more creative solutions to conflicts than first meet the eye. Simply put, most conflict arises when different people who are in relationship to one another attempt to get their needs met. If we can engage conflict in healthy and power-aware ways, it becomes an experiment in how we can support each other so that the most people possible have their needs met. The best kind of conflict transformation can also offer healing to the individuals involved.

When I call conflict “creative tension,” I find it becomes an opportunity to imagine ways forward that value and dignify all involved. “Creative tension” is a term coined by Martin Luther King Jr., which he used to describe the efficacy of direct action or civil unrest to illuminate marginalized peoples’ needs. I believe in a world where humans recognize our interdependence with each other and the entire ecosystem, and also value our differences.

Participants say:

“I feel like my stories are being heard and that my experiences are being validated.”

“I felt the inner growth to become a better communicator!”

“[I remembered that] I am not alone. We may work in the different areas, but our struggles are so close together… we don’t see that until we stop an actually listen to one another.”
